National Squad is the final squad and it is a real honour to be invited to swim for our top squad. The Squad is arranged by ability through the lanes, with the new swimmers being put in a lane together. National squad swimmers have the option to swim a maximum of six sessions per week, each session being two hours in duration. National squad is coached by the Lead Coach, Mr Chris Beal and others. The majority of the National squad swimmers should be capable of attaining County times. A handful will go on to achieve Regional times and historically Tornadoes has always ‘punched above its weight’ at getting swimmers to the Nationals. A number of our past National squad swimmers have gone on to universities with a strong sporting ethic, such as Bath and current university choices amongst our youngsters include Loughbrough and Cardiff, both ASA centres of excellence.

There is an expectation that all squad swimmers will commit to a programme of regular training, appropriate to their age / development. It is also an expectation that the swimmers will be available for selection to Club galas and Open meets. Tornadoes is proud to enter three leagues each year, Novice League, Southern Junior League and Arena league and all squad swimmers are asked to keep an eye on the dates for these galas in order to be available for selection wherever possible.

Squad swimmers are given every opportunity to attain their personal swimming goals and will be supported on their swimming journey every step of the way. The Coaches are happy to chat with parents and swimmers after and before sessions to answer any questions that you may have.

Squad swimmers will be encouraged to think about their diet and other exercise programmes.

Squad swimming is hard at times but fun. A lot of our swimmers make friends for life through squads and making the Nationals or the Regional competition is the icing on the cake!
